Site Planning & Enclosure Engineering
The 1500 kVA Dry Type Transformer represents a significant footprint in any electrical layout. In high-density commercial projects, allocating premium, climate-controlled floor space for a standard indoor dry type transformer is often economically inefficient. Consequently, facility engineers are increasingly specifying these units for rooftop or service yard installations to maximize rentable interior area.
However, moving a dry-type unit outdoors introduces severe risks. Standard ventilated enclosures allow wind-driven rain to bypass the louvers, leading to immediate insulation faults. Therefore, converting this unit into a viable outdoor dry type transformer requires a complete architectural redesign of the housing, moving from simple punched-steel vents to complex filtration geometries.
Engineering for Outdoor Survival

To ensure longevity in uncontrolled environments, we address two specific failure mechanisms: Wind-Driven Ingress and Phase-Change Moisture.
- NEMA 3R / IP44 Labyrinth: We utilize Double-Folded Labyrinth Louvers. These geometries force intake air to make multiple 90-degree turns. While air can navigate this path, water droplets and heavy particulates cannot; they impact the steel baffles and drain away via gravity before they can reach the live HV coils.
- Dew Point Management: While IP44 stops rain, it cannot stop humidity. The primary risk for outdoor units is "Cold Start Flashover." During off-load periods (e.g., night), the core temperature drops. If it hits the dew point, moisture vapor condenses into a liquid film on the windings. To prevent this, we install Hygrostat-Controlled Heaters that maintain the internal temperature at 5-7°C above ambient, physically preventing water vapor from condensing on the insulation surface.

Handling 2165 Amps: Connection Logic
Delivering approximately 2165 Amps (at 400V) presents a physical connection challenge. Utilizing multiple parallel heavy-gauge cables can lead to mechanical stress on the LV terminals (Cantilever Load).
Therefore, the low-voltage throat of our 1500 kVA unit is designed with a reinforced Busbar Connection Flange. This allows for a direct, rigid coupling to a Busway system (Busduct), which is the industry standard for safely transmitting currents exceeding 2000A in data centers and heavy industries.

Typical Application Context
- Data Center Cooling Yards: Installed outdoors to power external chillers, freeing up white space inside the server hall.
- Industrial Retrofits: Placed on reinforced rooftops when basement switch rooms are fully occupied.
- Marine Ports: Shore-to-ship power supply units where the enclosure must resist both salt spray and heavy rain.
- Hospital Critical Power: Clean, fire-safe transformer supply for operating theaters where oil-filled units are prohibited by local fire codes.
- High-Rise Mixed-Use Buildings: Rooftop installation serving combined residential and retail loads, eliminating basement transformer room requirements.
- Renewable Energy Substations: Step-up interface between solar/wind inverter output and the medium-voltage grid connection.

FAQ
Q1: What is the difference between the indoor (IP20) and outdoor (IP44/NEMA 3R) versions?
The indoor IP20 version uses open ventilation slots for maximum airflow in a controlled environment. The outdoor IP44/NEMA 3R version uses labyrinth louvers that block wind-driven rain from reaching the windings. The enclosure type must be specified at the time of order - field conversion is not practical.
Q2: Can this unit be installed on a rooftop?
Yes, with the IP44/NEMA 3R outdoor enclosure. The mounting pad must be rated for approximately 3,500–4,500 kg. We can supply certified dimensional drawings and weight distribution data to support your structural assessment.
Q3: What does the "AF +33% Capacity" cooling option mean?
The base unit (AN mode) is rated at 1,500 kVA. Adding the optional thermostatically controlled fans (AF mode) raises continuous output to approximately 2,000 kVA - using the same physical footprint. The fans activate automatically under load and shut off during off-peak hours.
Q4: What routine maintenance does a dry-type transformer require?
Very little. There is no oil to sample or replace. Maintenance is limited to annual cleaning of enclosure louvers, periodic thermal imaging of LV busbar connections, and checking that the winding temperature sensors and space heaters are functioning correctly.
Q5: What certifications does this transformer carry?
Units are designed and tested to IEC 60076-11 and GB 1094.11. CE marking is available for European deliveries. A full factory test report covering ratio, no-load loss, load loss, impedance voltage, and temperature rise is supplied with every unit.
